EIRE 7 – Dalkey | EIRE signs of WW II
May 30, 2019 · Were these the remains of a long-lost EIRE No.7 sign below the surface? What followed over a six-month period was the unearthing and lifting and cleaning of an estimated 100 tons of stones laid out in trenches in the precise shape of EIRE.
EIRE8 – Bray Head | EIRE signs of WW II
The sign in my view, is in remarkably good condition; most of the letters are clearly identifiable – the initial E is perhaps not as healthy, but the frame is still apparent, and the number of the nearby LOP, 8, Bray Head is also reasonably clear.
About the Coastal Watch | EIRE signs of WW II
The Coastal Watch was set up in 1939 to guard against invasion of Ireland, declared neutral, via the sea. More than 80 sites around the coast from north Louth to Donegal were selected, and look out posts were located on these sites.
About the project | EIRE signs of WW II
On your aerial photo of Wicklow Head the EIRE Sign (no. 9) is clearly visible at the base of the round tower. I was involved in the search and subsequent cleaning of the Loophead sign. We whitewashed it exactly as it would have been in 1944.
EIRE80 – Malin Head | EIRE signs of WW II
Malin Head has been restored since these aerial photographs were done. You can read a report on the restoration here – the restoration was done in 2015. It looks beautiful, far better than it did when I saw it as a child.
Donegal | EIRE signs of WW II
Sign at Mucros in Donegal added as closest to LOP 71 (Bing Maps) This sign is almost impossible to see on the aerial photographs but it has been renovated at some point.

Wicklow | EIRE signs of WW II
In July 2018, a major fire on Bray Head in Wicklow cleared significant amounts of gorse growth. One of the outcomes of that was that the EIRE sign, which must have been hidden for years, was revealed again. I am grateful to Kate Muldowney and Ray Cranley who were responsible for letting me know the sign had been seen again.
