Jan 18, 2021 · In 1972, AE released the #1 EAX (Electronic Automatic eXchange) switch for Class 5 (local end office) functions, with Class 4 (toll) functions being added a year or so later. The #2 EAX switch came several years later to serve smaller central offices and used updated hardware and software.

The GTD-5 EAX, GTE Automatic Electric's digital class 4/5 central office telephone switch, was first deployed on June 26, 1982.

The GTD-5 EAX (General Telephone Digital Number 5 Electronic Automatic Exchange) is the Class 5 telephone switch developed by GTE Automatic Electric Laboratories. This digital central office telephone circuit switching system is used in the former GTE service areas and by many smaller telecommunications service providers .

This paper describes the common control subsystem of the No. 1 electronic automatic exchange (EAX) switch. The data-processing unit is a high-speed interrupt-driven general-purpose computer. It is broken down into its component parts of control, memories, communication channels, and input/output and its functions are described.

The first EAX exchange went into trial operation in September 1972. Like the early step exchanges decades earlier, however, improvements were being designed even as the EAX No 1 went into production. By 1982 there were 3 million lines of EAX installed worldwide.
