When a Ness & Lucas amiibo figure are scanned, the player gains a Mystery Mushroom item that gives Mario the appearance of the figure scanned. You can also unlock Master Belch and Mr. Saturn Mystery Mushroom costumes from quests. A copy ability that is similar to Ness called "ESP" is first introduced in this game.

Many EarthBound references and cameos began to appear in many other Nintendo games, ranging from Ness and Lucas appearing as mystery mushroom power-ups in Super Mario Maker, to an entire EarthBound-themed level in Kirby Planet Robobot, and continues to be an important franchise represented in the Super Smash Bros. series.

Nintendo has said that some games, namely Mario 3, are an in-universe play or TV show. Mario 3 has curtains and shadows against the "backdrop". Mario Maker 1 played into this by having "bloopers" where you can hear Mario land in bottomless pits.
