Original design, special details or introduction of ground-breaking technology have led to success of many Sako rifles. Here are our legendary models. In 1923, the Lotta rifle, i.e. the m/24 model, became the first rifle assembled as a mass production in Sako’s factory.

The first civilian rifle bearing the Sako name was the L42 (Luodikko [rifle] model 1942) chambered for the 7×33mm Sako cartridge, prototyped in 1942, and commercial production started after World War II.

These, were available to and used by scads of gunmakers from the end of WWII until the mid-late 1960s and many very fine and often quite inexpensive hunting rifles were built on them, Sako was one such marque.

A rifle that was the first long action Sako imported into the U.S. after WWII; the Sako High Power Mauser Sporting Rifle, with Fabrique Nationale action. Importation began in the early 1950s and most sources say it ended around 1957.

Throughout these tumultuous years, SAKO continued to make rifles, known the world over for the smoothest actions. Their current offerings include that same butter smooth action and a litany of features that make the rifles highly sought after by militaries and hunters around the globe.

Sako is a special case in the Finnish industrial history. It was first started in 1919, when the Finnish Civil Guards needed a workshop to repair Russian-made rifles obtained during the Civil War. The workshop was made economically independent on 1 April 1921, and that is the day which Sako considers its day of birth.

The first SAKO rifle produced under new leadership was the SAKO L46. It is a bolt-action rifle chambered for the most popular Finnish cartridges, advertised as an accurate hunting rifle for the working man.
