It is powered by a naturally aspirated 3.5-litre inline-six, delivering up to 245hp to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission and limited-slip differential.

Only two B9 coupés were built on the basis of the "old" E24 chassis, with the short stroke 3451ccm B9 engine. These cars were built alongside the B7S coupés and were used as "development cars" (Entwicklungsfahrzeuge).
