The International Building Code (IBC) and International Residential Code (IRC) prescribe the ASTM E136 fire test for assessing the combustibility of materials. ASTM E136 uses a vertical tube furnace to expose building materials to a temperature of 750° C (1382°F).

These two main tests are described in the standards of ASTM International: ASTM E136 for combustibility and ASTM E84 for flame spread. The ASTM E84 test method also addresses the regulation for visible smoke characteristics.

ASTM E136 specifically states that it “does not apply to laminated or coated materials”, however there are no alternative tests to determine noncombustibility.

The ASTM E136 standard test method is used for assessing the combustibility of materials using a vertical tube furnace at 750°C. ICC-ES is an accredited third-party testing agency that uses a standardized testing method to ensure any material meets the noncombustibility standards.
