May 16, 2013 · Kellie, The main reason dowel rod perches are not good is that if a bird has only one size diameter perch for a long time, their feet are always grasping in the same position, and that can lead to arthritis and pressure sores. Their feet need different size perches so the feet get varied exercise, gripping different diameters.

Oct 17, 2023 · There's nothing wrong with dowel perches, as long as it's the right size for the bird's feet, however you want at least 3 perches in the cage. There are various applewood & manzanita wood perches at places like Chewy online, or Bonka Bird Toys. Bonka has various rope ones as well.

Dec 28, 2014 · About perches in general... may I add? Getting those nail-trimming perches can eliminate nail-trimming, which was always so stressful for me and the Rb. It took a few years, but I eventually established a pattern/rotation that keeps him trimmed. I keep a dowel as the main "highway" down the middle of the cage, but the special perches are all over.

Since I got him his new swinging perch, he really seems to want to be on it ALL the time. It has about a 3/4" diameter stainless perch and then the frame is even thinner (which he climbs all over).
