Now, if you have a particularly adversarial DM, geas will almost never be satisfying in the same way that the suggestion spell won't be. Nov 19, 2020 · Geas is charm (a defined creature condition), a command, and a shock collar, but not mind control. There is the compelling effect of being shocked for disobeying, but that's all the spell describes. The spell does not prevent the target from attempting to remove Geas themselves or seek out aid to remove it, unless the command forbids doing so.

The Geas spell is, in D&D lore, often a way of making sure an untrustworthy party, like those filthy adventurers, actually follow through on a deal. An almost canonical example is getting a Raise Dead, but agreeing to undertake a quest for the church which is enforced by the geas. It’s powerful but very DM dependent.

Jun 2, 2016 · Geas adds a whole new dynamic to the game. "Should I kill this guy even though I have a Geas not to kill anyone?" is an interesting tactical question to ask. I personally feel like a well-executed adventure involving a Geas could be quite fun, and to categorically deny that it has any place or use is inappropriate hyperbole.

Even if the target resisted the initial charm, they're still susceptible to the effects of Geas and the additional charm damage until the spell ends. That's why it's such a powerful spell.
