The SL angle is an indicator of dorsal intercalated segment instability deformity (DISI). The SL angle goes between: [1] - A line through the long axis of the scaphoid bone. - A line perpendicular to the distal articular surface of the lunate bone. It should normally be 30°-60°. [1]

A DISI deformity refers to extension of the lunate relative to the capitate and radius and is most commonly observed following rupture of the scapholunate interosseous ligament (Figure 4).

Dorsal intercalated segmental instability (DISI) can occur as a result of scapholunate ligament disruption and volar intercalated segmental instability (VISI) can occur as a result of disruption to the ulnar half of the volar arcuate ligament and the lunotriquetral ligament.
