Sep 15, 2021 · When a dirt track is dry, it is labeled fast. The term “fast” has little to do with the speed of a racetrack. A fast (dry) track can produce slow times, and a wet track can produce fast times. A nearly fast track, drying out from rainfall, is labeled good.

Dirt tracks are designed with a high point on the outside that slopes down towards the rail where the drainage ditches are located. This slope can cause track material to drift towards the rail, potentially creating a bias until the track officials rectify the surface.

Turf horse racing is conducted on grass tracks, while dirt horse racing takes place on dirt tracks. The running style and equipment used in turf and dirt horse racing differ, with turf races favoring a more tactical approach and dirt races favoring speed.
