Health NZ has four regions nationally, known as: Local health services are provided in 19 districts across the country, including: Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora provides public health services for New Zealanders at a national, regional and local level.

New Zealand’s 20 district health boards (DHBs) had oversight of public health services from 2001 until 2022, when they were replaced by Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand and Te Aka Whai Ora Māori Health Authority. This map shows the boundaries of the DHBs and the location of the country's public hospitals.

District health boards (DHBs) in New Zealand were organisations established by the New Zealand Public Health and Disability Act 2000 under the Fifth Labour Government, responsible for ensuring the provision of health and disability services to populations within a defined geographical area.

This layer contains the New Zealand District Health Board boundaries. District Health Boards are responsible for providing or buying Government funded health care services for the population of a specific geographical area.

Figure A3.1 shows the 21 District Health Board (DHB) areas in New Zealand, shaded according to their usually resident population.

Aug 17, 2017 · District health board (DHB) boundaries are defined by the Ministry of Health and are defined at meshblock level using the Stats NZ meshblock geography. They commenced on 1 January 2001 but ceased to exist on 30 June 2022.
