So it presumably has no hard time limit, but is exhausting to keep up, and can be flipped on and off several times per battle, but at enough of a cost of focus and energy that nobody turns it off until they've won.

In the manga, I believe it has been established over and over again that the mark itself doesn't kill people rather its the strain which the person's body goes through inorder to achieve it. I looked around the web and looked up questions and it looks like no one thinks Zenitsu ever achieved getting his Demon Slayer Mark.
