Restoration of Dejima in early 19th century. The aim of the current restoration and maintenance project is to restore the former Dejima Dutch Factory as it looked in the early 19th century, when the chief factor J.C. Blomhoff and physician P.F. von Siebold were active.

Dejima is designated a National Historic Site by the Japanese government. 1939: World War II breaks out (until 1945). 1941: Pearl Harbor attack and beginning of war in the Pacific. 1951: Dejima Restoration Project is launched (return of property to public ownership). 1954: Part of the former Dejima precincts is converted into a garden. 1957

The Dejima Museum Shop 9:00～18:00 ... Get on a tram bound for Sofukuji at Nagasaki Station and get off at Dejima or Shinchi Chinatown. Car: About six minutes from JR Nagasaki Station. About one minute from the exit of Dejima Tallway. ※ Please use nearby commercial parking lots.

The displays introduce Dejima’s role as a commercial and cultural bridge between Japan and the outside world. (Washrooms, wheelchair access washroom, and a multi-functional toilet and elevator are available.)

Are there any places to take a rest in Dejima? Please feel free to use outdoor benches in the garden area. Also, the tatami room on the 1st floor of “First Ship Captain’s Quarters” and, the 2nd floor of Former Nagasaki International Club are open for guests to take a rest.

Dejima was built in 1636 to confine the Portuguese and curtail the spread of Christianity. The construction project was financed by 25 influential Nagasaki merchants. With the expulsion of the Portuguese, the Dutch Trading Post in Hirado moved to Dejima. For the next 218 years, Dejima was a hub for the introduction of Western science and

Dejima Museum Shop Eating is not allowed in the Restored Zone near the West Gate, except for special events. In the Interaction Zone near the Eats Gate, eating and drinking is possible on the bench in the garden and in the lawn field.
