Aug 31, 2015 · A deep sand bad uses sugar fine sand and detritus doesn't settle into it, just stays on top, It also creates a low oxygen environment inside it where the special bacteria likes to grow. Your 1" sandbed will not promote nitrates but it deff won't make them better. More neutral It's just a sandbed at that point.

Jan 3, 2020 · Although I see the safety factor by employing a remote deep sand bed but can a five gallon bucket really provide enough surface area for significant denitrification? My current tank the 70 gallon runs mostly on micro with nitrates at 2 and phos at 0.8.

Dec 5, 2024 · Starting my tank in the next month. Last tank I had 10 years or so ago, I ran with a deep sand bed and had very little concern with nitrates. It was a 40 gal with sump. This time I'm running a 75 gal with a sump. So what's the consensus on deep sand beds these days?

Aug 11, 2020 · My sand bed is about 4-5" deep in the fuge. It is full of black metal deposits. I accidentally dropped a rock that had previously been buried in the sand for the last 5 years and it made a huge brown mess in both the tank and the fuge. Attached is a picture showing the amount of black metal deposits in the sand.

Oct 7, 2023 · Over the top for the deep sand bed makes perfect sence. If you force water through it, it will just make the sand aerobic. Over the top will allow the nutrients to continue to reduce in concentration as its used up in the sand bed. Carbon dosing does take a while to start. The bacteria populations have to adjust and build up

Dec 8, 2017 · When I was dabbling in this hobby sometime about 2003 or so, I remember some reefers on the old RC were trying out Deep Sand Beds (DSB's) 6" deep or greater, or more specifically of interest for me, a Remote Deep Sand Bed (RDSB) for nitrate reduction. Remote, just meaning that the DSB was not in your tank, or necessarily even in your sump.
