In ancient Roman religion, Roma was a female deity who personified the city of Rome and, more broadly, the Roman state. [1] . She was created and promoted to represent and propagate certain of Rome's ideas about itself, and to justify its rule. She was portrayed on coins, sculptures, architectural designs, and at official games and festivals.

La dea Roma è una figura della religione romana che, fin dal IV secolo a.C., fu la divinità che personificava la città di Roma e, più in generale, lo Stato romano.

Roma is usually depicted as a female figure in a long robe, wearing a helmet adorned with the head and wings of a griffin. She is usually seated on a throne, holding a spear in her hand, while her shield leans against the throne. Her portrait can be found on many coins and reliefs.

The grand fountain of Dea (Fountain of Rome’s Goddess; Fontana della Dea) is on the top of the famous Capitoline Hill, right on Capitoline Square. It enhances the front of Palazzo Senatorio, a monumental backdrop in Piazza del Campidoglio.

The monumental fountain is placed at the foot of the beautiful Terrace of the Pincio, in the eastern hemicycle of Piazza del Popolo.

Durante l'Impero romano fu soprattutto una Dea delle province romane, per convincere le genti alla fedeltà verso Roma. Infatti fu eretto un tempio dedicato a Roma a Smirne nel 195 a.c. e il suo culto fu esteso ad Efeso, Sardi e Delo.

La scultura raffigurante la Dea Roma si trova al centro dell’Altare della Patria, una grande ara votiva dedicata alla nazione italiana progettata dall’architetto Giuseppe Sacconi e decorata dallo scultore bresciano Angelo Zanelli tra il 1911 e il 1925.
