“De” originates from “Dekyid” which means peace. “Suung” refers to guarding. Therefore, Desuung means “Guardians of Peace”. Launched on February 14, 2011 by the fifth King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the De-suung programme aims to encourage citizens to take up a role in nation-building.

Jan 5, 2025 · ANNOUNCEMENT: RECRUITMENT OF DESUUPS INTO THE ROYAL BHUTAN POLICE De-suung Headquarters is pleased to announce the recruitment of 150 Desuups (100 male and 50 female) for service with the Royal Bhutan Police.

Dessuup is the highest form of the voluntary act in Bhutan. The volunteers wearing an orange uniform will be easily spotted in any event of disasters, charitable work and to help manage the crowd during festivals and celebrations.

On February 14, 2011, His Majesty the King established an institution known as the De-suup, or “Guardians of Peace,” marking the graduation of the initial cohort of 124 desuups after a month-long course.

Aug 22, 2020 · Desuups, in serving the nation, have to stay away from their families to avoid any risk of transmission, sleep on school floors with their own bedding and eat food from a common kitchen.

De-suups were the backbone of “reverse isolation”, a ground-breaking strategy initiated by the Royal command to shield vulnerable groups from community-transmitted Covid-19 virus. Focusing on elderly citizens and comorbid patient, reverse isolation facilities were set up nationwide.

The Ministry of Health and Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Science of Bhutan (KGUMSB) has planned to train additional 300 Desuup as frontline workers (Desuup Plus) to support the existing health workers.
