Scabiosa atropurpurea [dark red] is a broadleaf deciduous perennial with green foliage. In summer red flowers emerge. Attracts bees making it an excellent addition to pollinator gardens. Feb 26, 2019 · Scabiosa ‘Burgundy Bonnets’ – a form of Scabiosa atropurpurea, it was found by chance in a Suffolk garden. The flowers vary from dark burgundy red through to shades of pink and mauve. The blooms appear from July to September and grow to around 60cm tall.

The species name comes from the Latin words atro meaning dark and purpureum meaning purple in reference to flower color. Grow in rich, alkaline soil high in organic matter and provide good drainage, as it will not tolerate wet feet. Plant in a site with full sun.
