PDM (Pulse Density Modulation): a system for representing a sampled signal as a stream of single bits. Sampling rate is the rate at which a signal is sampled to produce a discrete-time representation. Wordlength is the number of bits used to represent a sample.

This Texas Instruments describes something along these lines. After some brief search I've found these off-the-shelf products which support PDM: Codecs: Cirrus , Maxim , TI's programmable.

Mar 1, 2022 · My biggest struggle is to find some DSPs with PDM input. I don't know if I'm looking for the correct thing in the datasheets but those DSPs seems pretty rare. Am I correct? If yes, how should I connect a PDM microphone to the DSP? Is using PDM to I²S converter the only solution? Thanks for the support, Harold

I am struggling to understand what exactly is needed to convert the PDM signal to an acceptable input for the FFT.

May 4, 2012 · The PDM3 was designed by Deltec Precision Audio’s Dave Clarke and has three priority selected inputs, USB, optical SPDIF and coaxial SPDIF, with sample rates from 44.1KHz/16 bit to 96KHz/24bit. At the neart of the design is the AK4397 32-bit DAC chip, which is able to accept digital signals up to 192kHz.

The internal DSP processing features are repurposed to enable the PDM interface, notice from PPC3 software the listed differences for each case. The PDM hardware interface configuration is configurable within Device Control panel as shown in the following picture.
