These materials document how DJ Screw developed the production technique known as “chopped and screwed,” which is closely associated with Houston hip hop.

DJ Screw is a hip-hop legend who created the distorted “chopped and screwed” sound: he would chop the lyrics, slow the tempo of a song, and reduce the pitch. Additional lyrics, often freestyles by Houston-based rappers, were then layered over his tracks.
