If you have an electronic drum module in your system that has an unused trigger input, why not put it to work with something you can assemble yourself, a DIY drum trigger? A piezo-based drum trigger is easy to build, and it can be attached to any acoustic drum in your kit.

Making a drum trigger from a piezo is theoretically straightforward. It's as simple as soldering a wire to the disc. That's it. The physical reality requires a little more work — soldering wire to a piezo disc is a bit delicate, and needs to be done with small gauge wire.

Making your own drum triggers for recording is easy and inexpensive. Pictured above is a 'finished' trigger, with a piezo transducer fitting snugly between two Moongels on the drum head, and the jack socket and attached jack-to-jack cable mounted on the drum using electrical tape.

Mikej's approach to triggering is best utilized when you want to have a dual-zone drum such as a snare (head+rim) or just add sounds to the rims of your drums if you happen to have enough inputs on your module.
