What you cannot convey via either conventional ARC or optical are HD formats such as DTS-HD Master Audio or Dolby TrueHD.

Dolby Surround is an upmixing mode developed by Dolby Labs. It can create pseudo surround channels for your speakers if the source audio lacks discrete channels for them.

With DD your surround sound amplifier gets told what piece of sound should go to which speaker, all the amplifier does is create volume. A DVD therefore with a DD soundtrack tells the amplifier what piece of sound should go to which speaker, the amp does not need to make this decision.

Both Dolby Digital Plus and standard Dolby Digital are lossy formats so really, apart from the Atmos element then the actual audio difference is quite small. I have DD+ via my SkyQ box and DD via optical from my Panny TV. The difference to me is imperceivable.
