What you cannot convey via either conventional ARC or optical are HD formats such as DTS-HD Master Audio or Dolby TrueHD.

My AV just displays DD or you can change it to DDsur but that's it. Both Dolby Digital Plus and standard Dolby Digital are lossy formats so really, apart from the Atmos element then the actual audio difference is quite small. I have DD+ via my SkyQ box and DD via optical from my Panny TV. The difference to me is imperceivable.
