Jun 24, 2020 · There was another upgrade on April 24th, 1982, when Delta introduced the world's first DC-8-71 passenger service. This modernized version of the DC-8-61 featured a low-noise, advanced technology CFM56 engine.

The DC-8-71 achieved the same end but required considerably more modification because the -61 did not already have the improved wings and relocated engines of the -62 and -63. Maximum takeoff weights remained the same but there was a slight reduction in payload because of the heavier engines.

Although outwardly similar to the competing 707 with a swept low-mounted wing and four podded turbojet engines, the DC-8 incorporated many innovations of its own, including advanced servicabilty and reliabilty features.

The DC-8 71 and 73 are updated versions of their DC-8 60 predecessors. They feature more powerful turbojet engines which increase their range. The 73 model retains the same payload capacity but the 71’s is slightly reduced due to modifications to its wings.
