The Douglas DC-8-53 was one of the first and most successful jet-powered transports for passengers and later for cargo. The development was lengthy but produced a variety of amazing jets with few incidences.

On February 23, 1962, the DC-8-53 "Pacific Pacer", the later PH-DCP, flew non-stop from Tokyo to Miami, a distance of 14010 km in 13 hours and 52 minutes. This was a new record for airliners. The average speed was 1010 km/h.

Named Fridtjof Nansen, the aircraft involved in the accident was a Douglas DC-8-53, registration PH-DCL, owned by KLM and operated on Viasa's behalf. [2] With constructor's number 45615/131, the airframe was the newest one of the type in KLM's fleet at the time the accident took place; it had accumulated 209 flight hours.

The DC-8 was officially announced in July 1955. Four versions were offered to begin with, all based on the same 45.9 m long airframe with a 43 m wingspan, but varying in engines and fuel capacity with maximum weights between 120 and 130 tonnes.

The DC-8 was 1000 m into takeoff, using runway 15L, when it lifted off prematurely. The aircraft banked left, touched down again, veered off the runway and continued 800 m on the sod before coming to rest with the undercarriage and all 4 engines torn off.

Built 1962 as PH-DCO for KLM. Leased to Garuda 1972, reregistered PK-GEC 1974. Leased to ALM as PH-DCO 1978, sold to Gulfstream American as N121GA 1979 and stored at Mojave and Miami. Converted to freighter 1991 and delivered to ARCA Colombia 1992 as HK-3746X. Withdrawn Miami 1998 and scrapped 1999. About to roll on runway 16.
