Jan 14, 2023 · On August 21, 1961, a Douglas DC-8-43 became the first civilian jet and the first jet airliner to break the sound barrier during a test flight. The aircraft was later delivered to Canadian Pacific Air Lines.

Delivered to United Air Lines as DC-8-11 N8015U in 1959. Converted to a DC-8-12 then to a DC-8-21 in 1966. Sold in 1977. In the colours of Fiesta Air who operated it from 1979 to 1980. To Gulfstream American in 1982 and used for parts at Mojave, CA. Later scrapped.
