1980s: DAF trucks started competing in the Dakar Rally, winning in 1982, 1985 and 1987. In the later years, they competed with a twin engine trucks: the 1986 TurboTwin , the 1987 TurboTwin II and the 1988 X1.

Johannes "Jan" de Rooy (19 February 1943 – 30 January 2024) was a Dutch rally raid driver who specialised in the truck category with DAF vehicles. He was mainly known for his participation in the Dakar Rally and won it in 1987.
