Feb 15, 2021 · Cyric didn't usurp any of the deities during the ToT which allowed for his ascension. Now to the bigger question, a lot of really, really bad plot decisions were made in the late '00s and early teens at WotC regarding DnD in general and the Realms in particular, which is probably why a lot of that era stuff doesn't really make much sense.
