The Old Fortress of Corfu (Greek: Παλαιό Φρούριο, Venetian: Fortezza Vecchia) is a Venetian fortress in the city of Corfu. The fortress covers the promontory which initially contained the old town of Corfu that had emerged during Byzantine times. [1]

The Old Fortress houses today the Archives of the Prefecture of Corfu, the Public Library’, Offices of the Ministry’ of Culture, Departments of the lonian University, rooms devoted to exhibitions or other events and it operates, in general, as an open air monumental area.

The Old Fortress of Corfu is one of the most impressive fortification works in Greece. It is the first thing visitors encounter as the ferry approaches Corfu. It stands on the eastern side of the town, on a rocky peninsula that gets into the sea.

The historical centre of Corfu town is delimited by the two fortresses. Along the east side there’s the ancient fortress on the sea, while on the west side there’s the new one. During the past the two fortresses of Corfu were linked by large walls, so that the inhabitants could live safe inside.
