COLTO is pleased to be able to promote collaboration between the fishing industry and science by again sponsoring the 2017/18 CCAMLR toothfish tag return lottery.

Ever since its inception in 2003, COLTO has worked closely with scientists, governments and NGOs to improve the status of our toothfish fisheries. First it was the collaboration of that group that led to the virtual elimination of IUU fishing for toothfish from within national Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs).

Jan 8, 2021 · COLTO Member, Australian Longline, is excited to introduce the 62 metre Antarctic Aurora to its fleet to operate within the toothfish fisheries that are managed by CCAMLR and AFMA under the strictest environmental conditions found in any fishery in the world.

Jun 10, 2021 · In a paper released today by the Stockholm Resilience Centre, COLTO has been acknowledged for its early work in helping to eradicate IUU fishing of toothfish in the Southern Ocean and its stewardship since of the toothfish resource.

The below graph shows the IUU toothfish history over time, which has been produced from data sourced from the Scientific Committee of CCAMLR until 2010. Since 2011, CCAMLR have not officially estimated IUU toothfish catches, and so COLTO has estimated these figures based on market price and surveillance data.

In 2011, COLTO applied to the Commissioner for Fair Trading in Western Australia and became an Incorporated Association. Along with this, COLTO is also an Australian Registered Body, which enables us to operate both nationally and internationally. In 2019, COLTO updated its Articles of Association. In March 2023, COLTO sponsored and organised a COLTO–CCAMLR Tagging Workshop, which was held at the CCAMLR Secretariat in Hobart, Australia, from 14 to 17 March. The Workshop included both meeting room discussions and a hands-on wet-lab component tagging toothfish at the University of Tasmania biological sciences laboratory.
