Sep 17, 2023 · Colemak is so popular because: It is easier to learn for QWERTY typists than many other layouts. It preserves the QWERTY position of three commonly-used shortcuts. It is a very large improvement over QWERTY, there may be better layouts, but Colemak-DH -> a better layout is very marginal compared to QWERTY -> Colemak-DH.

The predecessors of Colemak had S in its QWERTY place but making a good enough layout that way didn't prove possible so in the end S had to move.

Dec 1, 2011 · For Colemak users, I think the standard "returning back to home row" typing style is fine, since Colemak focus on the home row (65-69%), while Qwerty focus on the top row (50-55%). @Sean: Since your typing style is individually optimized, while Colemak typing style is standard, you are not advised to switch to Colemak or any other layouts.

Jun 15, 2008 · When I type in QWERTY, I don't use either pinky, except for Shift and Backspace, and my ring fingers take over for them. My middle finger, in turn, often covers many ring finger keys. Learning Colemak, meanwhile, forces me to properly use my fingers, leading to a much more graceful, relaxed feel. I'm definitely liking Colemak so far.
