Cole Oyl is a character created by E.C. Segar in his comic Thimble Theatre prior to Popeye's introduction. Mr. Mr. Oyl is Nana Oyl 's husband, the father of Olive and Castor Oyl , and the grandfather of Popeye Junior .

Castor Oyl is Olive Oyl 's older brother; they are the children of Cole Oyl and his wife Nana. He was the main protagonist of Thimble Theatre for years before the first appearance of the Popeye character in January 1929.

The statue of Cole Oyl is one of 16 separate statues that the city of Chester is erecting around its downtown, part of a decades-long plan honoring the Popeye menagerie created by hometown cartoonist Elzie Crisler Segar.

It featured the Oyl family – Cole; Nana; Olive; Castor; and Olive’s beau, Ham Gravy. Popeye’s first cartoon exposure was in the “Thimble Theatre” strip on January 17, 1929, when two of the regular characters—Castor Oyl and Ham Gravy—were searching for a sailor to pilot their boat.

Castor Oyl is named after castor oil, a medicine often given to children for various ailments until the mid 20th century. His mother Nana's name derives from "banana oil", an epithet similar to "baloney". His father Cole's name derives from "coal oil", a now arcane term for kerosene. His daughter Deezil's name derives from "diesel oil."
