Certainly for OTC codeine, there's extremely limited evidence for it (Cochrane couldn't find enough information to review it). However, 8/500 co-codamol (8mg codeine, 500mg paracetamol) and similar products are still extremely popular with patients - they're definitely not the cheapest things in the shop and that doesn't stop people.
