Southern Pacific began rebuilding its SD9 and GP9 fleets in its GRIP program at Sacramento. All these rebuilding efforts by the railroads had the goal of getting another 15 years out of their large fleet of first generation EMD locomotives, without having to buy new units.

On a Sunday in September 1975 the C&NW engine terminal at Chadron, Nebraska was full of power. Most of the power was GP35's and B-unit slugs; but there were some older geeps, such as the 712 and 4309.

Beginning in 1971 and continuing through 1981, C&NW rebuilt 74 GP7s and 55 GP9s at its shops in Oelwein, Iowa, including chopping the short hood on some of the units. Units with 1,500 horsepower and EMD 567BC engines are called "GP7Rs" and units with 1,750 horsepower and 567C engines are called "GP9Rs."

The KCS NW2 1102 seen in the first photo went on to become CNW 1008 and they got a lot of use out of her as she survived on their roster into the 80's. I wonder who took over more second hand power between ICG and CNW? Both took hundreds of cast off units in the 70's and 80's.
