Jun 15, 2023 · Unlike a car piston ring which is a single ring with a small gap, a Clupet ring has two turns (see photo from the Peter’s Railway YouTube video, linked below) with no gap between the two loops. In fact, the loops press against each other. How to make such a thing?

Mar 3, 2005 · The Clupet ring does have the advantage of avoiding the weak thin section of the lap joint, and is no doubt easier to make. The next drawing shows a two piece ring which offers better sealing. Incidentally, the effective piston ring as we know it was invented by John Ramsbottom in 1852.

Rufford Steam Works offers custom made rings of both plain and clupet type, for fitting to pistons and piston valves. Most rings are made from 250 grade cast iron. We have made a wide variety of clupet rings, from 3/4" for 5" Gauge Piston Valves to 9" for a full size Double Fairlie, and 12" for ploughing engines.

Jan 23, 2007 · On the B-Class (and several of John's older locomotives) we have these nifty clupet piston rings. Take a real hard look at the design and you'll see why they are so nice. The ones on the B are 3" in diameter and will squeeze up to 2 7/8 to a fitted bore.

Jun 15, 2023 · Last year, I had a lot of fun making a set of 8 clupet rings for the valves for Bongo. I filmed most of the work and have just put it together into a youtube video. The video from the Steam Workshop on making clupets was what got me started, but I felt that more could be added.

Clupet rings are ground perfectly round when closed up on a spindle and undergo a special hammering process to give them outward tension, this ensuring their exerting equalised radial pressure on the cylinder walls at all points.

Jun 11, 2023 · Intended for steam engines with zero leaks through the gap. I thought the cleverest bit was turning it inside out to machine the saw cut, heat treating and turning it back to leave no gap. And doing that with cast iron without breaking it.
