Physics Tutorial: Closed-End Air Columns - The Physics Classroom
An instrument consisting of a closed-end air column typically contains a metal tube in which one of the ends is covered and not open to the surrounding air and the opposite end is uncovered.

Resonances of closed air columns - HyperPhysics
A closed cylindrical air column will produce resonant standing waves at a fundamental frequency and at odd harmonics. The closed end is constrained to be a node of the wave and the open end is of course an antinode.

When a sound wave travels down an air column and reaches the other end, some of the wave reflects back. This occurs whether the other end of the tube is closed or open. If the end is closed, the wave inverts (because it has hit a more rigid medium).
Resonances of closed air columns - HyperPhysics
Conical air columns are employed in several of the woodwind musical instruments: oboe, bassoon, saxophone, and others. How does one tuning fork produce resonance at three different lengths? The closed tube fundamental resonance will be produced at length L = cm = ft , which is 1/4 of a wavelength.
At a closed boundary: the wave reflects if it has a high pressure at the wall. The air compresses at the wall and then bounces back. Which one has a lower fundamental tone? Open/open or open/closed?
Nov 29, 2023 · • Closed-End Air Columns: one end is open and one end is closed. • Open ends are anti-nodes (AN); air vibrates in and out of the air column. • Closed ends are nodes (N); air does not vibrate at the closed end. There are very clear wavelength and frequency relationships between the harmonics of an closed-end air column.

When a standing wave forms in an air column, there is always an antinode at any open end and a node at any closed end. If the air column is open at one end and closed at the other, the fundamental mode of vibration has an antinode at the open end and a node at the closed end.
