Class 43 (HST) is the TOPS classification used for the power cars of British Rail's InterCity 125 High Speed Train. The power cars were built by British Rail Engineering Limited between 1975 and 1982, and have been in service in the UK since 1976.

Aug 21, 2019 · Once the Voyagers amassed a serious presence in service, Virgin could afford to let HST power cars go without replacing them, so the Class 43 fleet subsequently met with a staged reduction. LIVERIES InterCity 43193 leads a Virgin CrossCountry set through Gallows Green, summing up the look of the trains in the earliest days of VXC.

43 018 preserved in original BR livery at Crewe Heritage Centre. The Class 43 currently serves with ScotRail and has served with a number other companies in the privatised era including GWR and Cross Country. The ScotRail sets are shorter than older sets to enable improved acceleration.

Class 43 High Speed Trains were a stop-gap measure to fill the void prior to the APT units being fully operational. While the APT project failed; the HST met with success never before seen in the history of British Railways.
