Chiolite is a tetragonal-ditetragonal dipyramidal mineral, composed of sodium, fluorine, and aluminium. The name originates from the combination of the Greek words for snow (χιώυ) and stone (λίθος). It is an allusion to its similarity and appearance to cryolite (ice stone).

Raman spectroscopy confirmed the colorless stone’s identity as chiolite. Chiolite is a very rare transparent to translucent colorless or snow-white mineral with a vitreous luster, perfect cleavage in one direction, and a white streak.

It crystallizes in the tetragonal system and is composed of sodium and aluminum, with the for-mula NaAl F (the presence of these. elements was confirmed with EDXRF).

Meaning ‘snow stone’ in Greek, the name reflects the white to colorless nature of the mineral. Fully transparent material is exceptionally rare and this is the by far the largest we have had, or seen for that matter. It is a collector’s gem with a hardness of just 3 1/2 on the Moh’s scale!
