Legend of the Demon Cat (simplified Chinese: 妖猫传; traditional Chinese: 妖貓傳; pinyin: Yāomāo chuán) is a 2017 Chinese-Japanese-Hong Kongese Xianxia fantasy mystery film co-written and directed by Chen Kaige, based on the Japanese novel series by Baku Yumemakura.

Nekomata (original form: 猫また, later forms: 猫又, 猫股, 猫胯) are a kind of cat yōkai described in Japanese folklore, classical kaidan, essays, etc. There are two very different types: those that live in the mountains and domestic cats that have grown old and transformed into yōkai .

In Chinese texts, specific yao 妖 are sometimes referred to as 鬼 (gui, spectre or ghost), 怪 (guai, strange monster), 魔 (mo, demon close to the Western sense) or 邪 (xie, spiritually deviant or morally corrupt being).

Legend of the Demon Cat is a colourful Sino-Japanese fantasy movie. It follows a former Chinese government official and poet who teams up with a Japanese monk to investigate strange events at court leading to injuries, illnesses and deaths.

Aided by imperial official and poet Bai Le Tian (Huang Xuan), Kukai investigates a series of mysterious court deaths linked to a rumored talking demon cat.
