May 6, 2009 · The bean-like seed pod is the origin of the alternative vernacular names Indian Bean Tree and Cigar Tree for C. bignonioides and C. speciosa. The tree is the food plant of the Catalpa Sphinx moth (Ceratomia catalpae), the leaves being eaten by the caterpillars.

Jun 8, 2014 · It may be of interest to a wood carver. Catalpa is good carving wood, beautiful grain, weather and insect resistant. Some carvers are always looking for large wood, no pun intended. Maybe contact a local wood carving club? Don't burn it or waste it.

Sep 25, 2005 · Large Catalpa Here is a big Catalpa at Linn Park in downtown Birmingham, Alabama. It looks to be 60' tall if an inch. Quite an impressive Catalpa if I do say so but too large for many to plant on a small lot.

Oct 3, 2010 · If you ever run out of wood in the winter, look for an Ash or Catalpa to take down. If you find Butternut, that's another very light wood that burns quickly and rots fast.

Dec 30, 2012 · In my experience, the only wood which consistently stinks even without the rottenness in the middle is Ailanthus (Tree of Heaven) or a Princess Tree. Both have smooth bark, grow really fast (lots of space between rings), and the wood has a yellowish tint. Sound familiar? Also, since it is a weak tree it would come down in the same type of wind conditions as a pine or some other conifer.
