The California Voluntary Protection Program (Cal/VPP) is designed to recognize employers and their employees who have implemented safety and health programs that effectively prevent and control occupational hazards.

Cal/VPP Program. Applicant eligibility. Any worksite regardless of size and type of business can apply for participation in the Cal/VPP program. Although participation is voluntary and any company can apply to join Cal/VPP, all companies are welcome and encouraged to participate (See benefits under purpose & description).

California Voluntary Protection Program (Cal/VPP Star and Cal/VPP Construction) is a top-level safety and health leadership program designed for fixed and non-fixed site establishments. Large construction projects that will be in operation for at least one year may be eligible for Cal/VPP Star fix-site recognition.

In VPP, management, labor, and OSHA work cooperatively and proactively to prevent fatalities, injuries, and illnesses through a system focused on: hazard prevention and control; worksite analysis; training; and management commitment and worker involvement.

What is the Cal/VPP Star? Element #1 - Management and Employee Involvement. Employees are trained in safety and health protection at the same time they are taught their job. Refresher training is provided as needed. Employees at all levels know what to do in emergency situations.
