If you are going to tackle a lot of work and are contemplating a cable controlled dozer, I would recommend a CAT cable control unit, I understand that they require less tinkering, and more parts are still available, more reliable and so on.

2 days ago · 9999 D7 4T's were produced from 1944 - 1945. They were all built for military use - being sold off as army surplus once the war was over. These machines are quite common down under. Quite a few were bought into the country to clear soldier settler blocks after WW2.

For any dozer over say, 20,000 lbs, a cable blade is usually heavy enough to dig in enough to do some worthwhile pushing. You can quite often pick up an old cable-drive D-7 or D-8 for $2-5,000. Don't pay more than $5,000 for a cable machine, no matter how good a condition it's in.
