Information theory provides a theoretical framework within which data about interdependencies between letters of English can be evaluated. It provides a yardstick for measuring the structure or amount of sequential constraint occurring in short letter sequences such as nonsense syllabIes. Information theory is based on probability measures.
Rated similarity of low association value CVC trigrams
This study provides mean ratings of similarity for pairs of low-m CVC trigrams which possess varying degrees and types of letter-position identity. A sample of 20 pairs for each kind of identity was rated.
Recognition, after 1, 3, 6, 15, and 30 intervening events, for CCC and CVC trigrams of low, medium, and high meaningfulness (M) was studied in the Shepard-Teghtsoonian paradigm. Correct recognition varied directly with M and inversely with number of interven- ing events.
Cross-cultural evaluation of learning and memory using a …
Nov 22, 2023 · Seventy-five native English-speaking (USA) and 104 native Italian-speaking (Italy) university students were administered 15-item lists of CVC trigrams using the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test paradigm with five study-test trials, an interference trial, and short- …
An information-theory measurement of CVC trigram meaningfulness …
The meaningfulness of nonsense syllables has generally been considered in terms of Ss’ ratings and use of associations and pronounceability. The redundancy of nonsense syllables was quantified by means of their component transitional probabilities, using …
Meaningfulness in classification learning with pronounceable trigrams ...
Two sets of pronounceable (CVC) trigrams were chosen as representative of 85 86 CHANG AND SHEPARD widely separated levels of meaningfulness. One set consisted of eight familiar three-letter words that could all be interpreted as concrete nouns.
Relations among characteristics of CVC trigrams - ScienceDirect
Ratings of frequency of occurrence, ease of learning, pronunciability, familiarity, activity, potency, evaluation, and association measures were collected for 390 CVC trigrams selected to represent different levels of objective frequency.
Re-evaluation of the meaningfulness of all possible CVC trigrams.
There are 2,480 possible combinations of three letters of the Roman alphabet which meet the restrictions mentioned above. These trigrams were arranged in eight groups of 300 and one group of 80. The orders were partially determined by Glaze's value.
Relations among characteristics of CVC trigrams - Academia.edu
Several characteristics of trigrams have been identified, e.g., association value, familiarity, and pronunciability (Goss and Nodine, 1965). Studies designed to assess the correlation between individual pairs of such characteristics (e.g., Underwood and Schulz, 1960; Noble, 1953, 1954) suggest, however, that they all may vary along a single ...
A measure of pronunciability of CVC trigrams | Behavior
All 2100 CVC trigrams were scaled for pronunciability by measuring pronunciation latency (PLat). The resulting distribution of PLat scores was extremely leptokurtic and positively skewed. Scores ranged from a minimum of .531 sec to a maximum of 1.726 sec. Average PLat was .81 sec.
