Removal of a central venous catheter (CVC) is a procedure that should be undertaken with as much care and skill as CVC insertion and maintenance and by an experienced practitioner who has been assessed as competent to perform it.

A central venous catheter (CVC) access is most often used on a temporary basis. It’s not the best long-term option for several reasons, which we’ll discuss in more detail later. But first you need to understand exactly what a CVC is and who it works best for.

Remove the CVC, pulling straight out and parallel to the skin while maintaining gentle, constant traction. If resistance is met, stop the removal, secure the CVC, and contact the nephrologist.
