Aug 10, 2018 · The first export customer for the Il-62 was Czechoslovakia’s flag carrier CSA, who got their first machine, OK-YBA, on October 29, 1969, followed by -YBB on November 28 for services to Moscow and a long-haul service to Jakarta via Damascus, Karachi and Rangoon (today Yangon).

ČSA Flight 540 was a regularly scheduled international flight from Prague, Czechoslovakia to Tehran, Iran via Damascus, Syria and Baghdad, Iraq. On 20 August 1975, the flight, operated by an Ilyushin Il-62, crashed 17 km (11 mi) from Damascus International Airport while descending at night in clear weather, breaking up and catching fire on impact.

Designed to fly 7700 km (distance Moscow – New York) with more than 150 passengers and reserve fuel. First flight was made with 73.55 [KN] Lyulka AL-7 turbojet engines, for the intended Kuznetsov NK-8-4 engines were not ready yet. At that moment it was the world largest jet airliner.

The Ilyushin Il-62 is a four-engine long-range narrowbody jet airliner for max. 195 passengers developed by the Soviet design bureau Ilyushin OKB.
