The first RS32's, 15 units for the NYC, were built in June-July 1961, immediately after the last RS11's were completed. The NYC's RS32's were initially placed in service on the hotshot Flexi-Van trains that Alco had so coveted for the RS27.

cr 2031 ALCo introduced the 2,000hp RS-32 in 1961, ending its production the next year with only 32 units having been manufactured. The RS-32 rides on four-wheel AAR Type B trucks.

CR had 24 RS32's, all of NYC heritage. CR tended to keep them in Upstate NY, and they were assigned to Dewitt Shops for maintenance.

Former Conrail/PC/NYC RS32 #4248 makes its initial appearance in its new home territory photographed at Brookings, SD on 12-29-79. While some of the former CR RS32's operated for a few trips still in their old colors, most were repainted as soon as they reached Huron.

Conrail continued to use these locomotives into the 1980s. This album also includes Conrail's slug units made from Alco products, and the RS3m, Penn Central and Conrail's rebuilt RS3 roadswitchers.

Designated as a "DL721" by ALCO, the 2,000 hp RS-32 was intended to compete with EMD 's GP20 and GE 's U25B locomotives. [1] . Only 35 units were produced, with 25 units ordered by New York Central in 1961 and 10 units by Southern Pacific in 1962. [2] . New York Central’s RS-32s were commonly seen in both road and local freight assignments.
