The first RS32's, 15 units for the NYC, were built in June-July 1961, immediately after the last RS11's were completed. The NYC's RS32's were initially placed in service on the hotshot Flexi-Van trains that Alco had so coveted for the RS27.

cr 2031 ALCo introduced the 2,000hp RS-32 in 1961, ending its production the next year with only 32 units having been manufactured. The RS-32 rides on four-wheel AAR Type B trucks.

Designated as a "DL721" by ALCO, the 2,000 hp RS-32 was intended to compete with EMD 's GP20 and GE 's U25B locomotives. [1] . Only 35 units were produced, with 25 units ordered by New York Central in 1961 and 10 units by Southern Pacific in 1962. [2] . New York Central’s RS-32s were commonly seen in both road and local freight assignments.
