Conrail inherited EMD GP7's from the Penn Central (252), Reading Company (17), Erie Lackawanna (71), and the Jersey Central (13). CR placed the units in series 5600-5999. Built between October 1949 and May 1954, EMD powered it's first hood unit with their 16-cylinder supercharged 567B prime mover.

Conrail's fleet of nearly 400 GP7's came from Central Railroad of New Jersey, Erie Lackawanna, Penn Central, and Reading Company. They were series CR 5600-5999. In 1976, Conrail began rebuilding GP7's into GP8's, assigning them to the 5400-5462 series. Some units were initially numbered 5720-5728 but in 1978 were renumbered to 5400-5408.

Conrail rebuilt some of its older GP units and kept them in local service for several more years. It was a cheap way to get some serviceable power in the early days. Heres one of them working a cut of trailer flats at North Bergen.
