The GE C40-8W is a 6-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by GE Transportation Systems from 1989 to 1994. Often referred to as the Dash light series, it is part of the GE Dash 8 Series of freight locomotives. This locomotive model is distinguished from the predecessor Dash 8-40C by the addition of a newer "wide" or "safety" cab.

Jan 1, 2025 · The C40-8 model and its variants (C40-8W, C40-8M, and C44-8W/C41-8W) began General Electric's dominance in locomotive manufacturing. This reign lasted from the 1990s until GE sold its transportation division to Wabtec Freight in February, 2019.

Sometime during the 1980's, EMD had slipped from America's number one locomotive manufacturer, surpassed by a revamped and modernized General Electric, with the C40-8W (as Conrail classed them) leading the way for GE toward the 21st century.

Oct 8, 1993 · The Conrail C40-8W, a new generation in crew comfort locomotives. They were the first units bought new equipped with air conditioning, and the last units to come from the factory without ditch lights.
