Type V collagen has 3 varieties of alpha chains: alpha-1 (COL5A1, 120215); alpha-2 (COL5A2), and alpha-3 (COL5A3; 120216). It has a specific pericellular distribution and is not considered an interstitial collagen. It is thought also to provide an inner core for large collagen fibers.
