The EMD E8 is a 2,250-horsepower (1,678 kW), A1A-A1A passenger-train locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division (EMD) of La Grange, Illinois. A total of 450 cab versions, or E8As, were built from August 1949 to January 1954, 447 for the U.S. and 3 for Canada. 46 E8Bs were built from December 1949 to January 1954, all for the U.S.

C&NW E8 512 stopped at the Clybourn Avenue Station in Chicago, Illinois on August 18, 1982, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. In 1973, C&NW acquired 11 second hand E-units from Union Pacific, and rebuilt them before placing them in suburban service. The UP locomotives included a few E8B's and E9B's, which were rebuilt with home made cabs, which aesthetically were not very pleasing. And in 1974, C&NW rebuilt and renumbered 11 E8's.

Dec 6, 2021 · It is IRM’s first E8A passenger engine and the Museum’s first C&NW E-unit. The locomotive is complete and in generally good condition, though it will need some repairs and updates to run.

Suburban Train E8 5027A West Chicago, Ill. 2274 views CNW E8's were still a common sight on Commuter runs out of Chicago in the summer of 1981. CNW E8 #5027A is on the point of this westbound scoot about to make a brief station stop at West Chicago in August of that year.

Chicago and NorthWestern E8 locomotive 5032A at the Proviso yard diesel shop. Popular on the Chicago commuter scene throughout the 1970's-1980's before Metra. For a brief time the CNW actually was one of the few roads in the US that made money on its commuter service north and northwest in and out of the Windy City.
