Thirteen GP40Ps were built in October 1968 for the Central Railroad of New Jersey (CNJ) and paid for by the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT). The CNJ put the units in service on the Raritan Valley Line and the North Jersey Coast Line.

The versatile EMD GP40 series, manufactured by Electro-Motive Division (EMD), were built between 1965-1971. The GP40 is powered by EMD’s 16 cylinder, 645E3 prime mover, producing 3,000hp, and much like its predecessor, the GP35, was successful and proved reliable for many class 1 and shortline carriers.

Built on a 55-foot frame (for the freight version), the GP40 was powered by an EMD 645E4 16-cylinder diesel engine generating 3,000 hp (2,240 kW). As most railroads in the mid-1960s were eager for new power, and power that had a higher horsepower, the GP40 was a hit with EMD’s customers all over North America.

My favorite engines on New Jersey Transit are the 4100-4112 series GP40PH-2 units due to their CNJ heritage. I know they will be replaced sooner rather than later at this point and time, but are currently still running strong for NJT.

Leading the train is a pair of ex-CNJ GP40Ps with the 4109 recently being painted as a tribute to the Central Railroad of New Jersey. The Central Railroad of New Jersey had already closed their Jersey City waterfront terminal by the time their iconic GP40Ps arrived in October of 1968.

Original class leader of the CNJ GP40P fleet leads train 879 to Hackettstown through Mountain Station. One of NJ Transit's 13 ex-CNJ GP40Ps leads Train #1630 east on the Pascack Valley Line. The locomotive is one of a handful of these thirteen 49-year old veterans to have been overhauled for non-revenue service.

EMD built 13 GP40P's for CNJ in October 1968. On longer frames than the standard GP40 to accomodate a steam generator, the GP40P's produced the same 3,000hp from the EMD 645E3 16-cylinder prime mover. CNJ assigned the GP40P's number series 3671-3683.
