Most SD70s are still in service with Norfolk Southern and Canadian National (CN), which merged with Illinois Central in 1999. In February 2017, NS began a program to convert its SD70s from DC to AC, which will also have a new wide-nose cab, and several other upgrades. They will be designated as SD70ACC.

The SD70M-2 is the SD70ACe's DC-traction counter-part. Like the SD70ACe, the locomotive was rated at 4,300 hp. NS ordered all of their SD70M-2's at 4,000 hp. Norfolk Southern (NS), Florida East Coast (FEC), and Canadian National (CN) were the only customers to purchase this locomotive new.

Jun 13, 2024 · The shape of the trucks and carbody together gave the SD70 a long, clean-lined appearance. Both a standard cab (SD70) and a wide-nosed safety cab (SD70M) were available, the latter using the design that appeared on late SD60M production, with two "teardrop" windshields and a tapered nose.

The SD70M has a wide nose and a large comfort cab (officially known as the "North American Safety Cab"), allowing more crew members to ride comfortably inside of the locomotive than the older standard cab designs.

The EMD (Electro Motive Division) SD70M is a type of 4,000hp six-axle diesel locomotive built from 1992 to 2004 (and briefly resumed from 2005 to 2007-2008) with over 1,600 built. EMDX #7000: one of the first SD70M units built and demonstrated upon introduction.
